Perceptions of online education by mothers in the Mayan Area of Yucatán

Abstract

Confinement during COVID-19 moved educational activities to homes, online education became the basis for learning and scholastic advancement of most students. The purpose of this research is to investigate perceptions of mothers of secondary school adolescents in the rural remain region of Yucatán Mexico regarding online Education. Throughout ethnographic techniques four mothers were approached. Their discourse reflects a balance between positive perceptions of online education related to Health Protection and the continuation of educational services and the negative effects related mostly to economic handicaps and their inability to acquire technological equipment for online instruction. Results allow a fair balance between benefits and handicaps of online education in rural Mexico and invite to reflect upon the uses of online education in this population in the future.
